n Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th of October, a two-day event with contemporary short films from Finland will take place in the historical Iris cinema (55 Akademias St), with free admission.
The two-day event is presented by the Finnish Film Foundation (SES) and the Department of Film (ELO) of AALTO University in co-organization with Irida Visions, the cultural festival of the Cultural Students’ Club of the University of Athens (N.K.U.A.) with the support of the Finnish Institute at Athens, the Finnish Association of Greece and the Embassy of Finland in Athens.
The event presents a series of beautiful films from Finland, divided into 4 short programmes, each lasting a little over an hour. The selection was made by a group of female students (members of the Cultural Club) from a list of films that represent the country’s contemporary production. The selected films have participated and won awards at numerous festivals around the world (Toronto International Film Festival, Annecy, Karlovy Vary IFF, Visions du Réel, Clermont-Ferrand among many others). They showcase Finnish culture and everyday life, highlighting contemporary social issues through the unique perspective and concerns of their creators. The aim of the selection is to create a pluralistic programme that combines emotional depth and humanism with cinematic aesthetics and artistic experimentation.
Three guest filmmakers from Finland will be present at the two-day event. Directors Niina Vuorisara and Saara Hakkarainen and cinematographer Cristal Alakoski will discuss with the audience after the screening of their films and will hold a masterclass on the process of making short films and contemporary film production in Finland.
All the films will be screened with english subtitles.
