In November, the first Joni Hertell grant recipient, Dr. Riia Timonen, began her research period in Athens. Enabled by the grant, Riia is studying the social and economic structures of the Late Bronze Age (1600-1200 BCE) Mycenaean communities in Greece. The goal of her postdoc project is to identify and analyze sites where various agricultural activities were practiced, and thereby highlight the self-sufficiency of rural communities.
✨ Riia is very excited to return to her beloved Athens for an extended period. She can usually be spotted working at the Nordic Library, or sampling local delicacies at one of Athens’ numerous street markets.
